Michael Gamlen, the founder of Gamlen Instruments in England, with his tablet production experience of several decades has designed the world’s first computer-controlled desktop tablet press. The current range of the company includes three compaction analyzers which can be used for a wide variety of activities ranging from research-development to small series production. With their help, individual tablets can be produced with controlled and well reproducible force (pressure). In this way, by using small amounts of material, the tableting properties of the various experimental API-excipient mixtures can be compared easily and quickly. Comparative measurements prove that the instrument can well simulate the compaction conditions present in high-speed rotary presses used in high scale production. The instruments are suitable for completing the research-development process of tablet formulation, for investigating tableting problems occurring during the manufacturing process, for analyzing the manufacturability of the materials, for comparing the materials from different suppliers, for precise and reproducible production of individual tablets for analytical purposes (e.g. for NIR and Raman methods), for education and demonstration etc. The tablet presses can also be used in a humidity control chamber.

For these devices a rental solution is also offered.

Gamlen M-model: stand-alone unit without computer control used for small scale tablet production with tightly controlled compaction force. With the buttons the production parameters can be set. Output: approx. 180 tablets/hour.

Gamlen R-model: computer controlled instrument that analysis the compression and compaction. Not only does it produce tablets but also measures the compaction and ejection forces in function of the displacement. It is suitable for pre-compression and repeated compression tableting for producing multi-layer and dry coated tablets. The R model can work in fixed load, fixed thickness or breaking force modes. The measured data such as compaction rate and force, ejection force as well as in tablet breaking mode force and displacement are recorded automatically in Excel format by the software.

Gamlen D-model: the most versatile Gamlen instrument measuring compression and compaction equipped with a rotatable die platform. Due to this design, the instrument not only produces tablets but also measures the compaction, ejection and detachment forces of the tablets in function of displacement. It is suitable for pre-compression and repeated compression tableting for producing multi-layer and dry coated tablets. The D model can work in fixed load, fixed thickness or breaking force modes. The measured data such as compaction rate and force, detachment force, ejection force as well as in tablet breaking mode force and displacement are recorded automatically in Excel format by the software.
